Vendor's Comments

"Wurinya is a magnificent home in Collinswoods pre-eminent street, Salisbury Terrace. This grand sandstone residence was built in 1905, by one of Adelaides leading architects, Alfred Wells, for his own family home. Wells chose his signature turret, used in many of his award winning public building designs (including Adelaide Arcade, Norwood Townhall, Tandanya and the Jubilee Exhibition Building), to create a striking entrance to his home. The home reveals Wells attention to detail. The beautifully crafted window alcoves and recesses, in the formal living and dining rooms, draw the eye towards the simple but elegant golden leadlight window panes. The dining rooms unique curved ceiling was purpose built by Wells to enhance the rooms acoustics for his daughter Audrey, who was an aspiring opera singer. Now painted white the ceiling was originally adorned in yellow stars on a dark blue backdrop. In addition four charming mantelpieces remain intact though the fire hearths have been replaced with gas heating. The homes generous grounds boast a beautiful garden in which traces of the substantial kitchen garden, from an earlier era, are still evident. A charming pomegranate tree remains as a reminder of gentler times in Adelaides history. In the 1930s Wurinya passed to the Ross family in whose care it has remained for 80 years. Four generations of the family have enjoyed the home and it has left an indelible mark in their memories. The much-loved nooks and crannies surrounding the home have been the playground for children from each generation providing them the freedom to roam and explore in safety. The home and garden have played host to many family gatherings, as the family has celebrated significant life events in their lives and the lives of their friends. This delightful home is now ready for the next generation to make it part of their story.
